The Art of Hypnosis

November 6, 2009

When one thinks of hypnosis, one may think of a pocket watch swung back and forth in front of a person tied in a chair until that person falls asleep and lays there unconscious. Once the victim wakes up, he or she will remain “possessed”, obeying everything that is asked of him or her. However, hypnosis is nothing like your typical movie portrayal. In fact, people who are hypnotized have free will and are not sleepy at all. A trance state simply means one is in a sort of “moment”, combined with relaxation and imagination. Day dreaming is a result of hypnosis, where one’s focus is centered on one specific task, for example, reading or watching a movie. While doing such activities, one usually zones out of reality and temporarily forgets all the usually thoughts existing in ones conscious that helps them finish normal tasks. During these moments, anything asked sounds highly suggestive. This means that one will most likely do what they are asked to while in this state of mind. Nevertheless, some suggestions may fail if the subject does not want to do it.
